Edmodo and the Fairness Issue

I was going to introduce my freshmen students to Edmodo early in the year. Then I took a survey and found that about 25 percent of my students don't have Internet at home. I'm surprised, frankly.

Now I'm not so sure I want to use Edmodo. If I do, a minority of my students will have to go to the library on their lunch break. I would cry foul myself if someone required me to do that.

Anyone have any opinions on this? Is anyone using Edmodo with students yet?

  1. A couple of thoughts...
-do they have access on their phones?
-are they being deceptive about their access to avoid work. Try searching for them on Facebook. My survey showed only about 5% that did not.
-give them access (briefly) in class

    Any other ideas?

  2. I am going "paperless" with edmodo, but giving the option to students that do not have the access to get the paper copy.

I am different though because of the way GTC is block now, students have 2 days to get their work done (get to a computer theirs or someone else's) and get it submitted to me.

  3. A lot of report cards will be sent out electronically. Maybe you can check if your students are the one on that list. If yes, then no excuse. If no, then paper. Ahead of time for fairness.

  4. You should check with Marlene B. She set up an internet page for students to get assignments and ask questions if they need help. She said it has been working well for her, so I would think she has resolve the access issue.
    Just a thought.

  5. I worried about the fairness and access issue but nearly all of my students have a facebook page. So I am comfortable with using edmodo. I learned this week that some of my students access edmodo via their phones!
