Global Writers

I'm here on break at the "Seeing the Thinking behind the Writing" workshop, and I'm encouraged to see a push to add more "eyes" to our students' writing by having them post it to various sites where fellow students can see it, as well as the teacher. My only concern about this enhanced audience is that some students, particularly ones who are struggling with the content area, might be reluctant to share their efforts with their peers. However, the opportunity to take essays to publication on the internet should appeal to many students. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  1. During a writing unit in my class, students have several opportunities to share their work with fellow students in my class. I like the idea of enlarging that audience. However,I would be more comfortable limiting that audience to perhaps other students and teachers within CCTS.

  2. I like that idea of a larger audience. Maybe teachers from the same grade level at the two different campuses could share a wiki space or a blog. I think you then have to teach students what's appropriate when it comes to posting a comment. This is a good lesson in empathy. I know someone who commented on a facebook post that has created quite a bit of animosity right within my own extended family. When it goes public and in writing, it can have unintended consequences. That's a good lesson for young people. Thanks, Anne.
