What's Really Essential?

What Challenges Do Today's English Teachers Face?

Great English / Language Arts teachers are in high demand, but with the profession comes a range of challenges from increased testing to differentiating instruction for a wide range of reading and writing levels and navigating changing technology.

Recently, CNN.com's Subject Matters posted an article that outlined some of the big decision points facing today's English / Language Arts teachers:

  • Teach test-taking skills or trust that the well-taught curriculum is the best preparation?
  • How to make time for student-interest reading and academic reading?
  • How to provide timely feedback on writing assignments when class sizes are growing?
  • How to build online literacy skills along with traditional skills?
  • How to know when traditional skills take priority over technology integration.
What would you add to this list?
